Aa! Megami-sama [1993]
One of the classics that time did not forget yet the remake outdid it in all aspects.
.Story [Feels almost like a hentai]
General Scenario: 1/2 Teenage dork dials the wrong number and ends up living with a beautiful goddess. Soon afterwards her also godly sisters pop up and his life becomes very complex. The story is a mix of comedy, romance and drama, about Keichi and Belldandy falling in love and staying true to each other, even when the cosmic forces conspire against them.
The whole “Sudden Girlfriend Appearance” never made much sense. And a Magical Girlfriend one makes even less. But judging it as a fictional story, it is far better than most similar series as it leaves room for infinite possibilities.
Pace of Plot and Side Stories: 1 The series is only 5 episodes long and doesn’t make use of its potential. But then again you don’t feel that there is time to be wasted.
Believability/Reasoning/Realism: 1/2 The whole deal is quite unrealistic. Beautiful goddesses, living in your apartment and helping you solve your problems with epic-level magic? That is something that happens only in anime. Plus, only living with them but never go beyond peeking and hugging is something that all men should loathe worldwide.
But on the other side, most supernatural events have some wacky scientific explanation. This makes all the unreasonable events to be accepted simply as plausible.
Conclusion: 1/2 There is a catchy conclusion but it’s nothing solid. You can clearly expect a continuation of the series.
Total for story: 2/5
Character [Sultan’s favorite place]
Presence: 1 I admit that Belldandy is amongst my favorite anime girls. Too gentle and good to be true, but then again she is a goddess and that is enough of an excuse. Her sisters Urd and Skuld are also very interesting. Few series manage to present so many diverse and yet likable characters in such a small amount of time.
But Keichi is excluded. Keichi was and still is a typical male dork that is swarmed by beautiful girls without being anything special. Oh, sure, he is gentle, kind, good-hearted and the like; but let’s face it, girls don’t really notice such things. We can always justify it with the fact that Belldandy is a goddess that can see people for what they really are. But since I am not a god, I say he is a sissy for feeling embarrassed every time he has the chance to make some lovey-dovey. He and all other males like him in most harem anime are despicable! They give the male gender a bad name. He is the driest and worst character amongst the cast.
Personality/Quirks and Backdrop Stories: 1 All characters have quirks, backdrop stories and goals that go beyond their stereotypes as sex-bombs, edgy lolitas and shy male virgins. The secondary characters are all very likable and give enough coloring to main ones. None of them were bad or unneeded in the story. I can’t say the same about Keichi (and to think he is supposed to be the protagonist!).
But since the series doesn’t show that part of the manga, they will feel quite dry most of the time.
Development and Catharsis: 1 Nothing major. The characters are colored but are not developing at all (blame it on the small duration). Keichi and Belldandy come a bit closer in the end but it’s nothing much.
Total for characters: 3/5
Animation: 3/5 [Time is a harsh judge]
The animation is mediocre in all accounts by today’s standards. Not bad and yet not interesting anymore. The colors and the figures are drawn in a very retro way. And not the good kind of retro. But the distinctive characters and the flashy Goddess cloths raise the general animation significantly.
Sound: 4/5 [Angel’s singing]
Music themes and voice acting are very good. The women voicing the goddesses are also the singers in the songs (a thing that was kept intact in the remake as well). Very likable voices and backdrop music for the time the series was produced.
Personal judgement: 2/5
I regret to inform you that the patient has left us. But worry not, as his ideals keep living inside his descendants. Ah! My Goddess initiated both the Harem and the Magical Girlfriend genres and normally it would get a 5 for that. But this fame belongs to the MANGA and not to this mediocre summary of it. Especially now that a newer and improved adaptation of the title has been made, there is no reason to consider this any further.
Overall: 3/5 [A literary quick watch]
Fast pace, little character development and unused story potential ruined a big portion of it. Likable characters and interesting events made the rest quite decent and a worthy watch.
Suggestion list
Read the manga version. It is far longer and better.
Watch the much-improved remake, AA! Megami-sama (2005). (good)
Love Hina (good) is the most renowned Harem anime. And the voice actors in it also sing the songs as well.
Club to Death Angel Dokuro-chan (good) is a black humored parody of the Magical Girlfriend genre. It also has flashy costumes in it.
Can Can Bunny Extra (good) is a Hentai tribute to this title.
