B Gata H Kei
B Gata H Kei is a romantic comedy based on likely the most perverted premise any non adults only rated anime ever had. It’s main lead is a completely sex obsessed beauty, Yamada, and its story revolves around her quest to find 100 sex partners after entering high school (though in essence it ends up being a quest to throw away her virginity). Kosuda, most average and boring person in the world, happens to become the first one in her list. From then on, the show pretty much concentrates on Yamada’s clumsy attempts to seduce Kosuda, which, of course, never work as intended. The show has lousy production values for the show of this age, and it’s story is silly and predictible… Nonetheless, it’s still plenty funny and fun. So in the end it comes down to how much do you like ecchi in you anime, if you love - go for this show, if you don’t - don’t. As simple as that.
.…But I get the feeling that all good men are used to “it”. I wonder if it’s possible to find any hot virgin guys…
Originally written as a 4-koma manga by Sanri Youko and later adapted to anime form by Yamamoto Yuusuke (NHK ni Youkoso) B Gata H Kei is a romantic comedy based on likely the most perverted premise a non adult only rated anime ever had. The heroine of the show, Yamada, is a very good-looking and popular girl, who despite still being a virgin, is obsessed with, well, sex. She dreams of finding 100 sex-friends after entering high school, however, as we know it, the first step is always the hardest. Due to some events she decides to seduce one of her classmates, the most average and boring person in the world, Kosuda, and make him first in her list. However, despite the premise and some dirty Yamada’s delusions, the show is actually surprisingly innocent. The whole twelve episodes of it concentrate on Yamada trying to pull Kosuda into bed in the weirdest and clumsiest ways possible, all the while, gradually falling in love with him. In the end, B Gata H Kei is just another romantic comedy with somewhat dirtier than usual premise… And while it does feel original thanks to that to an extent, the core of it is not that much different from hundreds of other anime of this genre.

Apart from the ecchi factor B Gata H Kei has little to nothing to offer; story is basically just Yamada’s delusions and attempts to seduce Kosuda, character side is only interesting because of Yamada’s overwhelming perversion and production values are about the lousiest of the season. However, you know, it’s still fun. As long as you have some time to waste and you are not allergic to this clumsy ecchi teens in Japan love, you can welcome this show with an open hands. You’ll forget it soon after watching it, though.
Animation: 3
Animation done by Hal Film Maker (Skip Beat!) is, well, just… simple. There are very few nice looking backgrounds and even those aren’t particularly detailed. Moreover a whole lot of skits happen in one color environment of imagination dimension. However still, the bright color palette goes well with the comedy element thus creating a really bright easy-going atmosphere, which is certainly something this show needs. Characters, on the other hand, happen to be too “roundish”, at least for my tastes. Everyone looks stuck somewhere in-between a midget and a normal adult giving the show this weird and needless chibi feel. They are also going on and on how Yamada is a beauty, but all I could see was somewhat of an above average looking girl, though since other female characters are even less attractive I guess it makes sense. Males kind of feel as if they have potatoes for heads, but I suppose there are very few fans of this show who’d care about them, huh. As for movement, it’s alright for the genre this show belongs. There is nothing to be particularly bothered with, nor is there anything to be astounded at… or even care about. The only aspect of animation worth commending would probably be the funny symbolism used to hide overly perverted details. Hell, the way they express erection is damn hilarious.

Sound: 2
While the cute energetic OP Oshiete A to Z is nice for the ears, ED Hadashi no Princess, of similar fashion, certainly takes the price of the best music piece in this show, both are sung by Tamura Yukari herself by the way. It’s been awhile since I’ve been entertained by an ending song so much, but it’s not like it’s that much of a great song, it just fits this show so perfectly I couldn’t make myself skip it. Background music, however, is bland for the most part, you’ll barely remember a single track, much less think about getting an OST. Oh, well, it’s not like anyone’s trying to make a musical masterpiece, but I’d still would prefer to hear something more memorable than the regular ban-ban-ban in ecchi comedies for a change.

Given this anime’s nature and the cast it hired I must say I’m quite surprised none of the seiyuu actually stands out. Well, the problem might have been the fact that most of the good seiyuu simply got the roles of the characters who are simply very far away from their forte. I mean, the most feminine voice-actress ever Noto Mamiko gets to voice brash and boyish sister of Kosuda and Tamura Yukari who is a master of cool, or cute, characters, gets to voice the hyperactive Yamada. As for the male cast… as always in the shows of this type, it’s steadily underwhelming.

Story: 2
There story is so simple, I suppose there is little need for me to go in depth (not that it has any). Yamada’s quest for 100 sex partners ends up swiftly interchanged by ecchi comedy and an innocent love story which starts from something not particularly innocent, at least from one of the sides. Anyway, most episodes have Yamada trying to snatch away Kosuda’s virginity in the most various (but also the least sensible) ways possible. Of course, show wouldn’t be fun if she’d succeed from her first try, so it kind of drags the same thing for a dozen of episodes. However, even if in essence the relationship is not really advancing, the show is still fun to watch for the whole of its running length. I mean, Yamada’s means to snatch Kosuda are damn hilarious, and, frankly, have you ever seen anything with a premise like that? I mean, heck, I’m still surprised something like this has even gotten through to TV. Anyway, it’s funny, and it’s fun, B Gata H Kei is probably as good as its measly premise let it be. Though, at the same time, I still must admit it does feel repetitive to an extent. Just don’t expect anything serious and you will have your day, this show was made to relax, so angst lovers, sorry. Too bad I also happen to be one of them. Oh yeah, and since manga is still ongoing you’d better not expect too much from an ending, heh.

Characters: 3
Kosuda, as a character, fails in pretty much every same part as any other lead in your ordinary harem does. I mean, his most original character trait is not having anything original at all. Nonetheless, his boringness is actually utilized very well in B Gata H Kei, all thanks to the individualistic Yamada, who has enough charisma to cover for them both. While the chemistry between the two characters doesn’t make you teary eyed or, frankly, even touch you on the romantic side, the comedic chemistry between them is what this show has it going for. Yamada’s insane stunts would never be possible without Kosuda’s utter lack of intuition and spine. While, neither of the characters will stay in your memory for long, it’s unlikely you will get tired of them before going through the entirety of the show.
Side cast, on the other hand, is completely bland and might as well be ignored. There is this perfect at everything rival of Yamada, but even though she has a semi-important part in the story, her value as a character hardly surpasses “meh:” level. But, yeah, I must admit there are quite a few funny scenes with her, so she passes as long as we are talking about comedy.

Conclusion: Rated for ages 13+, B Gata H Kei, even though having something of an original premise from the first sight, is just your average third-rate romantic comedy in the core (with very little romance as well). It has its funny moments, it has its weak love story, it has its semi-interesting leads. Frankly, it all ends up on how much you like lewd things in your anime, and how much of free time you got, as no matter which angle you would look at it from, B Gata H Kei is just a funny time killer and nothing else. While I know no other show of female lead being as aggressive as in here, I’d say that Love Hina and Seto no Hanayome, are relatively similar, and much more funny shows than B Gata H Kei is. Oh yeah, and you might want to check Green Green TV out too if you are fan of ecchi things.
